Alopecia After Cancer Treatment

Taxotere has been used for more than a decade and is one of the most widely used drugs to treat breast cancer patients. Of the 300,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer annually, it’s estimated than 75 percent of them will receive Taxotere as part of their treatment. But in recent years, some patients have reported permanent hair loss after taking the drug, a condition known as alopecia.

Medical experts consider alopecia a non-life threatening disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, the structures from which hairs grow. This can lead to hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere. In most cases, the hair loss may be limited to small round patches. But alopecia can progress to cause total loss of hair on the scalp or other parts of the body. This is apparently happening to a growing number of women who have taken Taxotere.

While alopecia doesn’t cause physical pain, the permanent hair loss can be emotionally devastating and create serious anti-social behavior and similar psychological conditions. The effects on a woman’s personal and professional life can be life-changing.

It’s even more disturbing that Taxotere’s manufacturer, Sanofi-Aventis, apparently knew about this disfiguring side effect for years, but never warned doctors and patients that the hair loss that’s often seen in cancer treatment might never be reversed, solely because of this drug.

At the Carse Law Firm, we believe that women diagnosed with breast cancer should have been fully informed in advance about their choices in drug therapy. Now the company’s failure to warn doctors, patients and families about Taxotere is leading to lawsuits to make Sanofi-Aventis pay for its negligence and lies.
